I use Outlook.com to service email from two external pop accounts. While I can receive messages to outlook.com from these external pop accounts, sending fails immediately. I have tried all combinations of login/password, SMTP ports, and security types (they do not support SSL).
The error that is forwarded to my outlook.com primary account when it fails to send has this attachment:
Reporting-MTA: dns;col0-wss1-s6.col0.hotmail.com
Received-From-MTA: dns;BLU179-W62
Arrival-Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2013 09:44:39 -0700
Final-Recipient: rfc822;*** Email address is removed for privacy ***
Action: failed
Status: 5.6.2
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;554 5.6.2 Delivery SMTP Error. Command: 4. Response: 502 Command not implemented
. Type=1 (-956218626:896:-2147418113)
The administrator at my pop account provider says this:
Hello Paul,
Since we were able to get the email to work, you should be able to as well. Our email admins tell us that your messages sent from outlook.com attempted to connect and login to the smtp server using AUTH PLAIN authentication method which we don't support (we only support DIGEST-MD5 and LOGIN). We're not sure how or why your setup is different and why its using that authentication method but this would be what you need to check into.
Thank you,

Of course, any assistance would be graciously accepted!
