Emails disappeared when account added to my Mac

Hi, Can you please help? I just added my hotmail account to my Mac (v10.6.8) However only emails from the last month loaded up. When I logged back into Microsoft all of my old emails (2,000+) have disappeared. I really need them back. How can I retrieve them? Thanks
