Gmail has stopped downloading to Outlook? Who's fault is it?

I have been using Outlook for many years.  I have been downloading from a Gmail address for over a year.  Suddenly, without my doing anything to change anything my user name and password that allows me to sign on to Gmail will not work (apparently the password will not work) to connect Outlook to Gmail to download messages.

The only thing that might pertain is the following that I just received from Google,  I have never received such a msg n the past.

Hi Charles,

Someone recently tried to use an application to sign in to your Google Account - *** Email address is removed for privacy ***.

We prevented the sign-in attempt in case this was a hijacker trying to access your account. Please review the details of the sign-in attempt:

If you do not recognize this sign-in attempt, someone else might be trying to access your account. You should sign in to your account and reset your password immediately.

Reset password

If this was you, and you are having trouble accessing your account, complete the troubleshooting steps listed at http://support.google.com/
