I'm running Windows 8 with Windows Updates - and ran updates yesterday. I use Outlook for 3 online accounts and the only one that has problems is the default msn account. The other two are gmail accounts.
Error messages (copy and past, what's visible is slightly different):
Task '*** Email address is removed for privacy ***' reported error (0x80004005) : 'There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account is configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web. Error: 4102. '
Task '*** Email address is removed for privacy ***' reported error (0x80041003) : 'The server reported a temporary error. Error: 5102. Server. Xfs request 'SyncBinary' failed. Response code: 'DbError', server response: '720 0'

Task '*** Email address is removed for privacy ***' reported error (0x8004102A) : 'Error with Send/Receive. There was an error synchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error : 80041003.'
I looked online for resolutions to 4102 errors. Then searched around in outlook data files. The data ost file (app. 1 GB) for the msn account was not available. I ran a scanpst on that file and afterwards the error messages stopped. Still the send / receive indicator ran and never seemed to finish (green indicator partly through). Now I'm back to the current state and the ost file is again unavailable.
Once Outlook during this phase stopped running rules automatically, which may just be an intermittent error. I could start them and then it worked OK.
