how do I highlight text in outgoing hotmail message? There is no highlight button in the text formatting bar

Outlook for Mac 2012 problem with deleting emails

I use Outlook for Mac 2012.   When I click a message in my Inbox, then click delete, the highlight jumps to the next message but does not delete.  OR, a prompt comes up asking if I want to permanently delete this message--then I click OK, and sometimes it deletes, sometimes not.  I often have to click it twice.  I used to be able to just click delete and delete all the messages I want one after the other.  How can I solve this frustrating problem?

The emails in Outlook for Mac 2011 in the list pane are highlighted in an ugly orange.  Is there any way to change that to a default blue or some other color?  (I'm not talking about categories, just the color used to highlight the current email.)  Iccan't find any setting for this in any of the Outlook for Mac settings.
