How do I ‘insert’ a letter in an email when its been missed out?

In Word there is an 'insert mode' which is fine.  When I try to insert a letter in an Outlook email it wipes out my previously typed letter.  Help!  Has anyone hacked this one?  Cant find anything on the forum.
