Why in Messenger 2012 opton 'tools-more options-log in' are out of order, they are dead. I'd like to hide Messenger window, but I can't: Is this properly, then why this options exists?

A friend of mine can sign onto messenger but when he tries to sign in to hotmail he gets no error message but it just reverts back to to the sign in screen so he cant use emails. He has changed his password but no success. Any help please?

The screen opens to messenger, which is empty (blank), I need my hotmail contact list.
