Question about Outlook Express

I updated on Tuesday, big mistake. I use Office but could open Word attachments without problem. They were automatically converted and opened. Not now. I can't open Word attachments which makes life very difficult. I do admin work for a number of local charities, some use Word, some Office so how can I open ALL the attachments I get????
