I've installed Office 2011 and all available updates as of today (January 8/13). Word, Powerpoint, Excel all work fine. However, Outlook won't open. Every time, it opens a dialog box asking me to choose an identity, but whether I choose an existing one or create a new one, the result is always the same: an error box reading, "Could not change to that identity. An unknown error has occurred in Outlook".

I've tried all the suggestions I could find here - deleted the prefs, rebuilt the database, started with the shift key held down. It's the same thing every time. I have no previous installation of Outlook or Outlook Express or Entourage or any Microsoft mail software on this computer. I'm about to chuck it and go back to Apple's software, unless someone has a suggestion that might work. All help appreciated.

i dont want outlook express took over from hotmail got it......  HOW GAVE  YOU PERMISSION TO CHANGE  HOTMAIL TO OUTLOOK EXPRESS?
YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING MESS IN MY RECEIVING AND SENDING mail  GET YOUR BRAIN CHECKED UP.
My hotmail live.com email suddenly went to Outlook Express  - I do not want Outlook, and I do not want the "suggested adds" section that accompanies this.  I believe this happened when Chase Bank online started up for me today, and without informing me also connected to my cellphone.  I do not want tech clutter, and try to keep a clean system with only what I choose to use.
I am using Outlook 2011 for Mac and would like to add my Window Live email account to my mailbox in outlook. Once added, I can receive my email in outlook but am unable to send outgoing mail through outlook - the error that comes up is saying 'The server does not support secure connections'. I have configured the SMTP with "25" as it is suggested I do by Microsoft but I know this setting is optimized for Outlook Express. How do I get this working correctly allowing me to use outlook for all my email accounts?

Our home PC is older running Windows XP, as well as IE 8 with Outlook Express.

Love Outlook Express!  Our home users all use that still.

But I realize that when our old PC dies soon, we will be getting Windows 8.  I have another personal laptop running Windows 7 and IE 10, so begrudgingly getting used to Live Mail for email on that machine (and getting used to Windows 8 on my new Surface, but it has a useless mail app).

Seems like I read a lot of problems experienced by XP systems downloading Live Mail.  And in fact, it doesn't list XP as a supported system.  But it would be nice if I could do that on our old PC, because other household users besides myself could get used to it and transfer data, before the machine dies.

Of course, I'm thinking that Live Mail can store information in the cloud, so it's easy to set up a new machine? Is that true, or is information stored only on the machine?

Anyhow, should I try and download it to XP, too much risk to bother with it?

In Outlook Express I can have accounts in different names (e.g. my wife's and mine) with the same email address and unless I change it, in mail all goes to the same In Box.  In Live Mail, there are two In Boxes etc. and in mail goes to both.  How do I get around this?
Just got a new computer, Windows 7.   No longer have Outlook Express for e-mail, so in setting up Windows Live Mail, I also got Windows Messenger.  So now it loads at Start-Up.  I have been unable to find any method to keep it from doing so.  It's just that every time I start the computer, I have to click it off because I will not use Instant Messenger.  Thanks for any help.

I maybe stupid asking this but after using Outlook Express for the past 8 years on my old XP computer i find using Windows Live hotmail on my new Windows 8 machine somewhat baffling at times. I cannot seem to find a way of asking for any new e mails on demand and find myself just having to wait for as and when i get them delivered, any pointers please.
