Starting a couple of weeks ago I have been prompted to provide my phone number in order to obtain a so called better protection of my account. Naturally, I have clicked "Next" and ignored it. Now my account is blocked unless I provide my phone number.

I have two questions:

1. How do I access my account again without providing my PERSONAL (and I emphasize PERSONAL) phone number?

2. How do I avoid providing my phone number to Microsoft in the future?

So, please let me know how do I access my account WITHOUT providing my phone number or some additional e-mail which, by the way, are not your business to know.

In case that you will not agree to let me bypass this "security" question for the future, please just provide me an access to my account in order to recover any data and addresses I have there and close it.

Thank you,

Ioan

My account was hacked about two days ago and the information was changed. There is a new name attached and secondary emails and phone numbers that aren't mine. The account was also changed to a parental permission account meaning even though I can change the password I cannot log in without parental permission, and since the hacker added their own email and phone number they will receive notice of change and change it back. I would like to either regain control of the account and remove all false emails, phone numbers and such or just completely delete it since it's attached to sensitive information. The only options seem to be through fax or snail mail, and i'm not sure that will work seeing as all the info has been changed. Any help on this matter is appreciated.

I think that what Microsoft does is an abuse. I don't even want to hear your justification and all that mumbo-jumbo about a better protection of my account. Please don't do this. Do not even try it. You would offend me. Really.

We all know how "safe and confidential" all our data are on internet in general and on Microsoft servers in this particular case. Just to give you an example, in LinkedIn I always get suggestion to send LinkedIn invitations to friend's mail addresses picked directly from my Microsoft Contacts List. How does LinkedIn have this list without my approval? Don't tell me this won't happen any more and I will be better protected if I provide you my phone number. Just don't.

You do not imagine how enraged I am at this moment. You just don't. You can't. I'm doing all that is humanly possible not to insult Microsoft in the worst ways possible. What they do is preposterous.

This is really outrageous.

I tried to log on to my skydrive to find a message stating that my account may have been used to send spam or violated a usage agreement.  A link was provided to get a security code, and was sent to my alternate email.  I entered this and the another page came up that wanted me to enter a phone number to receive another code.  On this page a drop down menu contains a country to select and a box for a phone number.  Only trouble is there is no United States.  So I just left it on the first country and entered my number anyway.  Have not received any text message, and support for skydrive seems almost non existent.  Posting on here is my only recourse.  Also there is no offending material on my skydrive, just some documents.  At this point I would rather just close the account and be done with it, However that seems to be impossible as well.  I've done nothing wrong and microsoft is making it very difficult to even find out what has happened or how to fix it.
Dear friends in the community:

A hacked account with a hacker that is still hacking away and harming people.  Once entered, the hacker changed both alternate email and phone number.  It has now been 1 month and things have not changed. The account has emails that are very important for business work ( development work in Africa).  If moderators know a way that I can get back in and get these it would be a life saver.  I tried to use the verification process but the information that is completed never reaches Microsoft.  The response is that 2 step security has been turned on, and so information is not accepted.
Hoping for a response.
Thanks
Dave

Details
Hotmail account I have had for 10 years was hacked July 19th, 2013
Security details were all changed - alternate email, phone
First effort to prove identity was approved July 22nd but then Microsoft said I must wait a month to have access?  Why, I don't know?
Tried entry again on August 21st, but no access.
Hacker has robbed contacts of more than $10,000 using my identity.

So far messages from community is that I have lost the account and all the related saved emails. Is this the case?

My son tried to access his hotmail account, and when he signed in it said that someone may have been on his account.  It said to enter a phone number and it would send a code either by text or by call.  He tried both with a couple different phone numbers and still hasn't received anything.  Called tech support and they said to try and receive it by email, but that option isn't available. Wouldn't even let him sign in to post here. Anyone know what to do?
