today when I looged in, my inbox was empty except for 9 emails. Why did the system empty it?

I have been reading my emails on my portable devices.  So I had not actually logged into hotmail in awhile.  Today when I logged in my inbox only had 9 emails.  It used to have 300.  Where did they go and why?
