red flags in email (hotmail)

I have red flags in my email.  I dont know what they are there for... and I cant get rid of them..... how do i remove them! they drive me crazy

 

I havent used a red flag yet can anyone enlighten me??????   thanx

Why is there a red flag on my e-mails after I open them?  I did not flag them.
