Is the remote assistance in Messenger free and unlimited to use?

Is MSN messenger remote assistane free all the time and unlimited for use? and if im online all the time..everyday..can i keep the remote assistance open and active all the time between me and the other user..no charge?is it free??and unlimited??

Will Remote Assistance still be possible in some way when Messenger is not supported?  I can't find that it is possible in Skype, for instance... 

 

I am trying to set up a new laptop with Windows 7 Pro OS, and have Windows Live Essential Messenger.  I also have older laptop with Widnwos Xp and Messenger.  I live on a small Hebridean island, and my IT advisor lives on another similar island soem distance away, up to now for many years he has been able to help me using RA via Messenger.

Where can I get it and does it include remote assistance?

"Request remote assistance" is the only thing in my activities tab

Nothing else shows up there, and when someone else tries to initiate something, like shared Bing search and time for a story, they don't work. I'm assuming they are both part of the activities tab normally, but I'm not sure what else should be in that category. What can I do to fix this? Thanks for your help.
