In GMail when you archive you can actually see that the messages are somehow compressed, saving space as well as the email. However, in Hotmail this cannot be determined considering you only see an email count and not the amount of space you have or are
utilizing.
From what I can tell, it seems that Archiving merely allows you to make a folder to store old messages...
