Outlook (Hotmail) account Mailbox thru iPad showing 48 unread email messages but upon checking emails there’s no unread emails.

Old Title:  Why does.my email say I have email when I don't have any unopened

 

My Access my hotmail thru my IPad email.  But instead of reading no emails to be read it says I have 48 unread?  Drives me nuts!  Thanks!
