After many months of smooth operation, I got repeated error messages on incoming mail (Socket  error10061; error no. Ox88CCCOE). following suggestions on this site I deleted my account on Windows Mail (Vista) and restablished it with the same settings that had worked before.  Rebooted. Now I can neither send nor receive.  I am using ATT in and out, port 110 inbound, 465 outbound.  Also tried 25 inbound.  nothing works.   This seems to be a common problem judging from the thread.  what is the solution?

BTW: website mail and I phone mail are working fine:  this only impacts Windows mail.

It's possible that the issue was caused by a corrupted program file in Windows Live Mail client installed in your desktop. Kindly repair Windows Live Mail by following the steps below:

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program.
3. Locate Windows Live Essential 2011 then click Uninstall/Change.
4. When a window appears, select Repair all Windows Live programs.
5. Restart your computer after the repair.

During the past couple of weeks:

Re.  some emails from friends appearing in my "Inbox" as well as those under my "Sent Items":

when I attempt to delete them they stop windows mail from working and seem to create a loop by having the screen return to the Windows Mail home page.

I run Windows 7.

If I do the above repair, will it delete my other emails?

George

While using windows live mail it popped up "Windows live mail has stopped working..."  I let it close and tried to reopen it but I get the same message.  I tried repairing windows essentials and also uninstalled and reinstalled it.  Nothing helps.  Have not encountered this problem before.  I am running Windows 8.1, I also tried disabling the firewall and that did not help.  Something in Windows Mail is causing itself to happen.  This is my default mail handler so I need this fixed.  HELP!
I am trying to transition my email with indy.rr.com into the windows mail. Help!

This was a problem I experienced in 8.1 Preview and now I see it is the same in 8.1 proper. I have tried marking the Apple emails as junk but the odd one still gets into my in-box. If this then gets to the top of the list Mail closes or freezes as it tries to open it. What is it about emails from Apple that is causing Mail to crash and is there anything I can do about it?

Any advice appreciated.

How can I stop sending the original email back to the sender when I reply in Windows Mail 8.1? And is it possible to import other fonts into the Mail App?  I the new Mail App and would prefer Windows Live 2011, but am afraid to uninstall all of the Windows Essential parts before downloading it!
I'm trying to add a send/receive external account to outlook.com. I can access the pop3 mail box of my
external email account successfully. However when I try to configure the smtp server I get the
above error message. The server settings I am using work fine in windows live mail 2012 and
also mozilla thunderbird and previously did with outlook express and windows mail.
If I try to import the settings from live mail, the settings displayed are correct, but I still get the
same error.

Judging from the plethora of hits I find relating to this or a similar issue this has to be an
Outlook.com problem. The only solutions offered seem to be requests to try Live Mail to
see if that works with the same settings. Well it does just fine. So how can we progress to a solution ?
